NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Head Coach Brian Kelly and the Iona University men’s water polo program have announced the selection of team captains for the 2025–2026 season. Rising seniors Matthew Mischlich (Houston, Texas/ Strake Jesuit College Prep), Coby Scanlon (Orlando, Fla./Olympia) and Rastko Jevdjovic (Belgrade, Serbia/ Third Belgrade Grammar School) will lead the Gaels during the upcoming fall campaign.
“I’m extremely happy with the captains who were selected. I know all three of them will step up and take their commitment to the program to another level. Each one of them is determined to build a positive winning culture.” said Kelly.
Matthew Mischlich
A senior attacker from Houston, Texas, Mischlich has been a consistent offensive threat for the Gaels. He appeared in all 27 games during the 2024 season, contributing 22 goals and 31 assists.
“It is a great honor to represent the Iona water polo program,” said Mischlich. “I love this team and would do anything for my teammates and coaches. Sharing this caring attitude as a leader and captain should help us win some big games this year.”
Coby Scanlon
Scanlon, a senior attacker from Orlando, Florida, is known for his strong two-way play. In the 2023 season, he tallied 15 goals, 27 assists, and led the team with 68 sprint wins.
“To represent Iona Water Polo is to show up every day with purpose,” said Scanlon. “It means outworking yesterday, holding each other accountable, and never settling for anything less than our best. As a captain, I’m here to lead that standard through hard work, discipline, and heart. This program is built on dedication, and we win by earning it—together.”
Rastko Jevdjovic
A senior center and center-defender from Belgrade, Serbia, Jevdjovic plays a crucial role on both ends of the pool. Known for his physical presence and smart defensive play, he has been a key contributor in the Gaels’ recent success.
“To represent Iona water polo means more than wearing the name — it’s about carrying the values, the discipline, and the pride that comes with it,” said Jevdjovic. “Every time I step up, I’m not just showing who I am, but what we stand for together.”
The Gaels will open their 2025 season against University of the Pacific on August 30 at 10:00 a.m. Eastern in Providence, RI, at Brown University. Check out the full Iona schedule at: https://ionagaels.com/sports/mens-water-polo/schedule.
