BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Freshman Nico Ivanov (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) of Division III No. 2-ranked Johns Hopkins University notched 12 goals, an assist, three steals and a field block at the Harvard University Invitational and the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship to earn Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) co-Rookie of the Week honors.
At the Harvard Invitational, he scored a goal and added a steal while drawing one ejection in a 10-9 loss to No. 19 Brown University.
His best performances of the week came at the CWPA Division III Championship hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Ivanov scored a goal with a steal and a drawn ejection in a 13-3 defeat of Washington & Jefferson College prior to tallying a career-high four goals along with an assist and two drawn ejections in a 15-8 win against Connecticut College to reach the tournament title game.
Facing the host Engineers of Division III No. 3 MIT, Ivanov led the Blue Jays with five goals, one steal, one block, and three drawn ejections en route to an 11-10 victory in the title tilt. For his efforts, Ivanov was named the Rookie of the Tournament and earned a spot on the All-Tournament First Team.
The Rookie of the Week award marks the inaugural weekly honor bestowed on Ivanov from the league office.
He shares the MAWPC Rookie of the Week award with Petar Leontijevic (Belgrade, Serbia) of Salem International University who totaled six goals, four assists and three steals for the Tigers at the CWPA Division II Championship hosted by Gannon University.
