WASHINGTON, D.C. — George Washington University announced the addition of Luca Castorina as an assistant coach for the 2025 season. Castorina, one of the most decorated goalkeepers in GW water polo history, joins the staff following the conclusion of his collegiate playing career in 2024.
Castorina was a four-time Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) All-Conference goalkeeper for the Revolutionaries, consistently proving to be among the top goalkeepers on the East Coast. Castorina led the defensive efforts for competitive teams throughout his career, as during his time, the Buff & Blue racked up 66 MAWPC wins and finished in the top three in the conference four times.
“Luca has been an integral part of GW water polo for the better part of six years,” said GW water polo head coach Barry King. “By every metric, he’s the best goalkeeper to ever play here. It is a real pleasure for me to have his assistance as we make a push back to the top of the conference and the nation.”
“I’m very excited to be back with the team, and I want to thank Barry King for the opportunity,” said Castorina. “My biggest focus will be on getting the goalies ready for competition so that they can perform at their highest level.”
Castorina debuted for GW in the 2021 season with a .589 save percentage as a rookie in the limited five-game winter season. By the end of his senior year, the Catania, Sicily native had broken the program’s all-time saves record by seven goals, briefly positioning the mark at 1,059. Castorina returned for a graduate season in 2024 and piled up another 299 saves to leave the all-time record at 1,358.
Castorina finished with a career .513 save percentage — third best in program history. He also owns the GW single-game saves record, after stopping 24 shots in a match versus the United States Naval Academy in 2021.
