KENOSHA, Wis. — The Macalester College water polo team kicked off the 2021 season with a pair of victories at Carthage College as the Scots won by scores of 18-13 and 13-5.
Holding a 9-8 edge at halftime of the first game, Macalester tallied four straight goals to take control, 13-8. Carthage answered with two goals sandwiched around a goal by sophomore Eleanor Michaud (Long Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) to make the score 14-10 after three quarters. Junior Annika Krueger (Emerald Hills, Calif./Sequoia) opened the fourth quarter with three consecutive tallies to push the lead to 17-10, and the Scots closed out the win, 18-13.
Krueger finished with five goals, while sophomore Sydney Hollingsworth (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) had four goals, while junior Riley Waters (Portland, Oregon/St. Mary’s Academy) and senior Adeline Steward-Nolan (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park and River Forest) each scored twice.
Kayli Sayatovic led Carthage with four goals, while Meghan Fisher tallied two.
In the second game, the Scots led a close game through three quarters by the score of 7-5, thanks to goals by Michaud and Steward-Nolan to end the period. Sophomore Malia Borg (Charleston, S.C./Academic Magnet) opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, and Krueger did the rest, scoring three straight goals, then closing the game with another as Macalester cruised to a 13-5 victory. Krueger registered six goals in Game 2, with Michaud, Steward-Nolan and Hollingsworth each scoring twice.
Taylor Woitesek led Carthage in goals with three, while McKenna Sutterlin made three saves in goal.
