KENOSHA, Wis. — McKendree University topped host Carthage College by an 11-3 score in the Firebirds’ home-opener at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center.
The Bearcats opened the contest with a goal during the first two minutes of the first quarter before Rylee McGee a five-meter penalty shot save to keep the McKendree lead at one.
The visitors added two more goals taking a 3-0 margin heading into the second quarter.
Carthage cut into the lead as Kira Jacobsen scored to pull the Firebirds within 3-1. However, the Bearcats quickly responded with two goals for a 5-1 advantage.
McGee made another save keeping it at four, but the visitors put in another goal for a 6-1 score heading into the intermission break.
Grace Steinberg got Carthage’s second goal of the game in the third quarter.
Another Firebirds’ strike from Abigail Karpluk shrank the host’s deficit to three, but McKendree answered with a goal of their own.
A last second goal saw Carthage head to the final quarter of play trailing 8-3 before three fourth quarter markers by the Bearcats sealed the 11-3 victory.
McGee recorded four saves in taking the loss.
