PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The Mercyhurst University men’s water polo team was unable to overcome a quartet of foes in games at Brown University during the 2024 Harvard Invitational as the Lakers fell to Wagner College, 18-12, Long Island University, 19-14, No. 20 the United States Naval Academy, 18-10, and the host/No. 19 Bears, 15-4.
Freshman Petar Vujovic kicked the weekend off with a six goal game against Navy on . Ultimately it was not enough, however, as Navy’s eight goal second quarter made the difference in a contest that ended 18-10.
The Lakers then matched up with Wagner to close out the first day of competition. Mercyhurst struggled to get things going as the Lakers fell by an 18-12 count. Vujovic led the Lakers with four goals.
Mercyhurst kicked off Sunday with a match against Long Island. After one quarter, the Lakers found themselves in 5-1 deficit. Things didn’t get much easier, as LIU continued to play well offensively and pulled away to secure a 19-14 win.
The weekend concluded with a match against host Brown. The Bears acquired a 5-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back in rolling to a 15-4 win. Vujovic and sophomore Ben Gavran scored the Lakers goals in the first quarter as Mercyhurst attempted to keep pace with Brown. However, the Lakers mustered just two more goals the rest of the way as Brown closed out the contest with a 10-2 run.
