2021 Mercyhurst University Men’s Water Polo Schedule
ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst University men’s water polo will be back in the pool for a full schedule in the Fall of 2021. The Lakers played a shortened season in the winter of 2020-21 and went 3-5. Mercyhurst will play 16 regular season games along with one exhibition during the Fall 2021 campaign.
The Lakers will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to open their season as part of the Brown Invitational on September 4. The next day, Mercyhurst will travel about an hour south to Providence, R.I., to face the Brown Bears and Fordham University on September 5.
Mount St. Mary’s University comes to Erie on September 11 for one regular season game and then an exhibition contest later in the day. The following weekend, Mercyhurst will head to Lewisburg, Pa. for the Bison Invitational at Bucknell Universty where the Lakers will play games against Fordham, Mount St. Mary’s, Wagner College, and St. Francis College Brooklyn.
Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) play starts on September 25 against McKendree and Salem University. Mercyhurst will play McKendree and Salem twice while playing Gannon University and Washington & Jefferson College once.
The Lakers will close out the regular season against Penn State Behrend on October 16 prior to the commencement of the postseason.
Mercyhurst hosts the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division II Championship at the Hallman Aquatics Center on October 23, with Salem, Gannon and McKendree prior to heading down to the Mylan Park Aquatic Center in Morgantown, W.Va., on November 6-7, as Salem hosts Gannon, Mercyhurst, McKendree and W&J in a five-team, six-game MAWPC-West championship weekend.
The victor of the MAWPC-West Championship earns a spot in the eight-team, 12-game MAWPC Championship slated for Friday-Sunday, November 19-21 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. The MAWPC-West Champion will take on the seven MAWPC-East institutions (Navy, Bucknell, Fordham, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, Mount St. Mary’s, Wagner) with an automatic berth to the 2021 NCAA Men’s Water Polo Championship on the line.
Mercyhurst returns 13 players from a season ago while adding six new players to the roster. Head coach Curtis Robinette also returns in 2021 with a career mark of 209-215 with the Lakers.
