ERIE, Pa. — Host Mercyhurst University fell to Mount St. Mary’s University, 18-8, and No. 20-ranked George Washington University, 22-6, on the first day of the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) at the Hallman Aquatics Center.
Against Mount St. Mary’s, the first quarter saw a lot of back-and-forth action as both teams had trouble scoring. The opening quarter concluded with a two-all tie, but the Mountaineers took command of the game in the second quarter to to acquire a 10-2 lead.
The Lakers attempted to make in the comeback in the second half, but Mount St. Mary’s enlarged its lead over the final 16 minutes to take a 10-goal win.
In Mercyhurst’s concluding game of the game, the Lakers jumped out to a 4-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. However, George Washington outscored the home team 7-1 in the second quarter to pull ahead by a 10-5 count entering halftime.
The second half was all Colonials as GW rolled to a 22-6 win.
