ERIE, Pa. — Mercyhurst University hosted the program’s first women’s water polo home games of the season this weekend at the 2025 Curtis Robinette Memorial Tournament and walked away with three wins in four games. The Lakers scored a total of 63 goals over the two days as Mercyhurst overcame Gannon University, 12-8, Penn State Behrend, 17-3, and Grove City College, 23-11, to accompany a 14-12 loss to Washington & Jefferson College.
The Lakers kicked off the weekend on Saturday, February 22, with a game against Gannon as both squads took the water in Erie for the first time this season.
To that point, Mercyhurst’s lone win of the season had come against the Golden Knights, and they were able to add their win total and sweep the season series with a 12-8 win.
Gannon opened the game with a four point first quarter, but goals from Victoria Mastrangelo and Grace Tirak brought the Lakers back within two points after one quarter of action. Gannon opened the second quarter with a goal with a goal from Jade Strickland. But three goals from Allie Dombkowski and one from Bri Allstun gave the Lakers a lead they would not surrender.
Molly Langridge added two more and Freya Green put one on the board as the Lakers entered the half with a 9-6 lead. Dombkowski, Grace Brzyski and Langridge put up another three in the second half as the Lakers sealed a 12-8 win.
Mercyhurst closed out day one with a 17-3 win over their other Erie rival, Penn State Behrend.
The Lakers opened the game on a 7-1 run, in large part thanks to the play of Marley Ramon, who tallied five saves in net in the first quarter. The game was the Lakers largest win this season so far as they won by 14 points.
Day two on Sunday, February 23, opened up with a tough match against Washington & Jefferson. The Lakers fell 14-12, but they saw some stellar play across the board as seven different players scored. Dombkowski led the way with three goals on just seven total shots in the matchup.
Mercyhurst closed the weekend with a high scoring 23-11 win against Grove City.
The Lakers opened the game on a 7-3 run that included goals from Green, Tirak and Dombkowski. At the break they had a 13-6 lead. In the second half of action, they held Grove City to just five goals as they pulled away to grab a 23-11 win. The victory was their fourth of the season and third of the weekend.
