Carthage College-vs.-Monmouth College Scoresheet

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Marissa Logan (Fr., Elmhurst, Ill./York) scored three times to claim Player of the Game honors as Monmouth College came back from an early deficit to knock-off Carthage College, 12-7, and take the Third Place game of the 2019 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Championship at Connecticut College’s Jane Cadwell Lott ’36 Natatorium.

The game marked the fourth meeting of the year between the CWPA Division III-West Region third place finishing Fighting Scots and the fourth place Lady Reds as Monmouth (7-11) claimed 13-10 (February 24 at Macalester College), 15-6 (March 2 at Wittenberg University) and 13-5 (March 31 at Macalester) victories against Carthage (4-15) to sweep the season series.

Down 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 in the first quarter, Monmouth tied the game at three-all 53 seconds into the second quarter when Emily Mathews (Jr., Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) netted the equalizer.  Carthage regained the lead at 4-3 with 4:29 until halftime as Meghan Fisher (Fr., Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) rocked in a go-ahead strike.

Following a red card to head coach Peter OllisBecca Dabrowski (Sr., McHenry, Ill./West) and Skylar Rapp (Fr., Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) turned the tables on the Lady Reds by hurling in back-to-back markers at 2:53 and 1:33, respectively, to give Monmouth its first lead at 5-4.

Sophie Flott (Fr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) tied the score prior to halftime by finding the back of the cage with 30 seconds left in the second quarter to deadlock the squads at five-all at the break.

Carthage went back in front 1:30 into the third quarter as Maddi Marsh (So., Irvine, Calif./Arnold O. Beckman) lined in a shot on the heels of a yellow card to head coach Laura Coffman (6:45).  Dabrowski (3:39) netted an equlizer, but Arianna Dakuras (So., Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) put Carthage back ahead at 7-6 with 2:52 left in the frame.

The Fighting Scots returned the favor following a yellow card to Marsh (1:50) as Dabrowski lined in a five-meter penalty shot (1:50) prior to Rapp ripping in a go-ahead score with 29 seconds left to put Monmouth ahead to stay at 8-7.

Logan insulated the lead midway through the fourth quarter by denting the twine at 4:13 and 3:36 to expand the margin to 10-7.  Dabrowski did the rest as she connected on even-strength (2:49) and penalty shot (1:25) scores to cap a 4-0 surge by the Fighting Scots and establish the 12-7 final score.

For Monmouth, Dabrowski led the way with six goals, while Logan (three), Rapp (two) and Mathews racked up the other half of their team’s offense.  Natalie Garcia (Fr., Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) earned the victory between the pipes with nine saves.

The Third Place finish marks a new high in terms of prestige in the CWPA Division III ranks as the team previously finished sixth (2016, 2017), seventh (2014, 2018) and eighth (2015) in the program’s prior trips to the championship.

Fisher, Dakuras and March each pumped in pairs of points for the Lady Reds, while Flott chipped in a solo marker.  Emma Jeronimus (Jr., Hoffman Estates, Ill./Fremd) blocked aside 16 Fighting Scots’ scoring tries in taking the loss.

By recording another Top Five finish, Carthage adds to a legacy of success which includes prior second (2010), third (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018) fourth (2013) and fifth (2011, 2012) place marks as the team has appeared in the Third Place game for the past seven seasons  (2013-to-2019).
