LEXINGTON, Va. — Saint Francis University women’s water polo came up short as the Red Flash were snuffed by Mount St. Mary’s University in overtime, 16-12, on the first day of the 2025 VMI Invitational hosted by the Virginia Military Institute.
With 5:28 left in the first quarter, Sam Eschleman scored the first goal for Saint Francis. The Mountaineers took a 2-1 lead, but a goal by Breeze Ohlson tied the game. She then tallied a goal on a penalty shot for a 3-2 score at the end of the first quarter.
Down two goals halfway through the fourth quarter, back-to-back goals by Caylah Olay tied the game at 12 apiece, sending the contest to overtime.
However, Mount St. Mary’s tallied four unanswered goals in overtime to take the game.
Eschleman, Ohlson and Olay led the team in scoring with three goals apiece.
Isabel Lumley recorded eight saves in net.
For Mount St. Mary’s, Rebecca Valentine put away four goals during the game followed by hat tricks from Anna Kegel and Maria Boix Pascual. Along with her two goals, Anita Radaelli provided four assists to her teammates and completed five steals against the Red Flash.
Becca Enquist recorded 10 saves in goal for the Mountaineers.
