PRINCETON, N.J. – Keller Maloney’s penalty shot goal with one second to go sent a thriller into overtime, but the No. 9-ranked University of California-San Diego Tritons defeated the host/No. 12 Princeton University Tigers, 11-10, at DeNunzio Pool on the opening night of the 2019 Princeton Invitational.

In overtime, the Tigers forced a turnover with five seconds to go, down a goal, but a last-second attempt hit the top bar and gave the Tritons the victory.

Princeton jumped out, scoring the first two goals of the game and held a 4-3 advantage after eight minutes of action. The Tigers extended their lead, snagging the first two tallies of the second stanza and held a 6-4 lead at halftime.

UC-San Diego rallied and tied the contest at six-all and seven-all in the third frame before taking an 8-7 lead with 5:09 remaining. The Tritons extended their advantage as the clock ticked near one minute to go, but Yurian Quinones answered with a tally with 40 seconds left. Princeton was awarded a penalty shot right before the buzzer as the UC-San Diego bench tried to call timeout without having one.

In the first portion of overtime, the Tritons collected two goals before Maloney’s tally with 1:23 lingering cut the Tigers’ deficit in half. Princeton forced a turnover as UC-San Diego was running the clock out, but could not convert.
