PRINCETON, N.J. — The No. 14-ranked Princeton University women’s water polo team defeated the Iona University Gaels, 17-8, at home in DeNunzio Pool.

The Tigers got on the board first with a goal from Olivia Krotts, who added another just minutes later to answer an early Iona equalizer.

Rachael Carver and Kayla Yelensky each tacked on another for the Tigers as the Gaels and the Tigers went back and forth. Iona added two more to bring themselves within one, but Yelensky added another goal on a penalty.

Just before the buzzer, Yelensky sent a ball over to Emese Batizi, who launched the ball from distance into the corner of the net, bringing the Princeton lead to 6-3 after the first.

In the second quarter, Kate Mallery, Yelensky and Riches each added tallies to extend the Princeton run to 5-0 and the score to 9-3 Princeton before the half.

Iona got two back to start the third quarter, while a shot from Princeton hit the crossbar, but Krotts was able to get the hat trick and score just a minute later, bringing the score to 10-5.

Shanna Davidson added two for the Tigers in the third, and despite Iona getting one back, Carver tacked on another to extend the Princeton lead to 13-6.

Iona scored to start the fourth quarter, but Kendall Wyer answered to keep the lead at seven. Mallery chipped in her second of the game, while Margaret Brandin got in on the scoring action to bring it to 16-7 Princeton.

Brandin added one more to bring the Tigers’ lead to 10, and despite Iona adding a late goal, Princeton took the win 17-8.

Krotts led the way with three goals, while Carver, Yelensky, Brandin and Mallery contributed pairs of markers.  Batizi, Charlotte Riches, Davidson and Wyer forked out solo markers.
