PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The No. 19-ranked Brown University men’s water polo beat Division III No. 7 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), 20-17, but lost to No. 16 Harvard University, 17-16, in a pair of Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) home games at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.

Ilias Stothart and Máté Tymcyna led the way for the Bears as both netted 10 markers on the day.

Facing Harvard, Stothart and Tymcyna powered Brown with four goals each, but a Bears’ comeback came up one-goal short. Dimitris Kratimenos had 14 saves for Brown.

The Bears trailed 9-8 at halftime but a 5-2 third quarter put the Crimson up four entering the final quarter. Brown trailed 17-13 with two minutes left in the game before Stothart scored his fourth goal. A goal by Mac Berry with 30 seconds left pulled Brown within two.

Daniel Hadar scored with nine seconds left but the Bears ran out of time, falling by one.

To close out the day, Tymcyna and Stothart each had six goals and Berry finished with four. Gabe Chang keyed the Bears with five assists. Kole Newman had nine saves and Kratimenos had seven.

The game entered the fourth quarter tied at 15-all. Brown scored the first goal of the fourth quarter with Berry finding the net. After an MIT goal, Stothart broke the tie and Brown pushed its lead to three with goals from Berry and Ramzi Megalli.

MIT added a goal but Hadar responded with a goal for the final score.
