SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The No. 20-ranked Brown University women’s water polo team continued its winning ways by downing California State University-East Bay, 11-10, and No. 19 San Jose State University,10-7, on the final day of the 2023 Santa Clara University Bronco Invitational.
Against Cal State East Bay, the Bears received a last second goal by Madeline Poissonnier to earn a one-goal victory.
Brown was led by three goals from Zoe King and two tallies by Sierra Martin. Six other Bears also found the net against the Pioneers.
After giving up the first goal of the game Brown got goals from Claire Pisani, Emily Suong and Martin to go up 3-1 after the first quarter.
The Bears took at 4-1 lead early in the second with a goal by Alexandra Love but did not score the rest of the quarter and took a 4-3 lead into the second half.
Martin and King pushed Brown’s lead to 6-3 and Lily Weiser‘s goal made it 7-4 but Brown gave up three-straight goals as the game was tied at seven-all less than a minute into the fourth quarter. King put the Bears back on top but two goals from the Pioneers put Brown down one.
King and Ella Palmer pushed the Bears back on top at 10-9 with 30 seconds left, but East Bay scored with three seconds remaininig to tie the game. Poissonnier scored as time expired to give Brown the win.
Roxanne Hazuka had three saves in net for the Bears.
A big third quarter gave Brown a 10-7 lead over San Jose State as Brown finished off a perfect 4-0 weekend.
Poissonnier scored three goals while Weiser, King and Martin all had two markers.
Pisani scored the first goal of the game, but San Jose State led 2-1 after the first quarter. Poissonnier scored to start the second quarter and after a goal by the Spartans, Weiser scored with just over a minute left in the half to make it three-all at the break.
King began the second half with a goal before Wesier followed to stake Brown to a 5-3 lead. King continued the run for Brown with a successful penalty shot to widen the margin to 6-3. Martin capped off the third quarter scoring with 44 seconds on the clock to make it 7-3 heading into the fourth quarter.
San Jose State scored four times over the final eight minutes, but Brown held the Spartans at bay with three goals as Martin (one) and Poissonnier (two) combined for all the Bears needed to escape with the win.
