SPRINGFIELD, Va. — The No. 20-ranked George Washington University men’s water polo team split a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) games at The St. James as the Revolutionaries fell to No. 2 Fordham University, 19-5, before coming back to beat Wagner College, 8-7, in overtime.
In a clash of the top two teams in the MAWPC, the Revolutionaries were not able to conquer the undefeated Fordham Rams.
Fordham took it to GW early and led 7-3 at halftime, before scoring six goals and shutting out GW in the third quarter. Fordham’s goal-streak continued into the fourth, building a 16-3 lead before finishing off the match at 19-5.
For GW, Andrija Sekulic and Antonio Florena notched pairs of goals with Adonis Vlassis denting the twine once.
After a Senior Night ceremony to honor seniors Leo Lueddemann and Sekulic, the GW Revs came back for the night game to face off against Wagner, a team they beat 13-12 earlier in the season.
It was a low-scoring affair with GW leading 4-2 at half at 6-3 at the end of the third quarter, but a 3-0 run for Wagner in the fourth quarter sent the game to overtime. In the extra frame, George Washington turned to its graduating senior Sekulic to find the game-winner.
Sekulic led the way for the Revolutionaries with four goals in the match.
