PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The No. 22-ranke Brown University women’s water polo team split the final day of the Bruno Classic at home in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center with an 11-10 loss to No. 24 University of the Pacific and a 12-9 victory over Villanova University to conclude the program’s opening weekend with a 2-2 mark.
Facing Pacific, strong showings from Ava Schoening, Gaby Montalvo and Ella Palmer were not enough to outlast the Tigers.
A penalty shot scored by Schoening got Brown on the board late in the first quarter, followed by a point apiece for Hanna Tidrenczel, Alexandra Love, Montalvo and Cleo Washer throughout the second quarter to bring the halftime score to 7-5 in favor of Pacific.
Sofia Holman and Palmer netted two more for the Bears in quarter three, paving the way for Schoening and Montalvo to pick up their second goals of the game, bringing Brown within reach of Pacific’s one-point lead. Palmer struck again in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 10-all with three minutes to go – but a goal in the last thirty seconds tipped the score back in the Tigers’ favor to end the contest.
Bruno bounced back to get the win over Villanova and close out their season-opening weekend on a high note.
Aubrie Anderson, Schoening and Samantha Kim showed out in the first half, matching a competitive performance from Villanova shot for shot. The Wildcats pulled into the lead briefly in the second quarter, but Madeleine Poissonnier answered for the Bears by netting her first goal of the game with 16 seconds to go, tying the game up at five-all heading into the half.
The second half was hard-fought. The Wildcats logged four goals to Brown’s three netted by Kim, Schoening, and Tidrenczel throughout the third quarter, keeping the match tied at nine-all heading into the homestretch.
A shutout fourth quarter sealed the deal for the Bears – Madeleine Poissonnier and Ella Palmer brought in one goal each, while Cleo Washer netted two to boost Brown to their 12-9 victory over Villanova.
