PROVIDENCE, R.I. —  No. 22-ranked Brown University opened the program’s 2025 women’s water polo season at home in the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center with a 13-7 defeat of Iona University and a 16-15 loss to No. 12 Indiana University at the Bruno Classic.

Taking on the Gaels, the Bears struck early against Iona, collecting their first win of the season with a strong six-point win.. Standout performances from senior Claire Poissonnier and sophomore Aubrie Anderson helped lead Brown to victory, with the pair netting nearly half of the Bears’ 13 points.

In the first quarter,  Anderson, Poissonnier and Sofia Holman found the net for Brown to secure the early lead over Iona. Poissonnier went on to pick up two more goals in the second quarter alongside Ava Schoening and Samantha Kim with both posting solo markers to extend Bruno’s lead over Iona to 7-3 entering halftime.

Anderson scored twice more throughout the second half, tying Poissonnier’s first-half performance with three goals apiece. Two goals from Alexandra Love and one goal each for Alessandra D’Arcy and Cleo Washer extended Bruno’s second-half total to six as the team rolled to victory for its first win of the 2025 season.

A last-second score by Indiana handed the Bears their first loss of the 2025 season.

Freshman Ava Schoening was first to get Brown on the board, followed by sophomore Hanna Tidrenczel and freshman Samantha Kim with their first goals of the match. Sophomore Gabriella Montalvo also found the net for her first goal of the season. Schoening, Tidrenzcel and Kim came back for one more each throughout the second quarter, while Poissonnier and junior Ella Palmer also picked up a goal apiece, bringing Brown within one point of Indiana’s 10-9 lead at halftime.

The Bears continued to trail the Hoosiers throughout the third quarter, logging three goals scored by Anderson, Tidrenczel and Holman to Indiana’s four.

The final quarter was the lowest-scoring as Hana Homma sank her first goal of the game followed by Kim picking up her third and fourth of the contest to tie the score at 15-all.

However, a last-second goal by Indiana tipped the score in the Hoosiers’ favor as Indiana escaped upset with a 16-15 win.
