PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 22-ranked Brown University women’s water polo earned its first win over No. 14 Princeton University in over 15 years as the Bears defeated the host Tigers, 12-11, and Mercyhurst University, 11-1, in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) action at DeNunzio Pool.

Facing Princeton, a late goal from Hanna Tidrenczel helped Brown overcome a fourth quarter three-goal deficit to claim victory.

A goal from Princeton put the Tigers up 11-8 with 6:42 left in the fourth quarter but Brown slowly made its comeback. The Bears got their first goal of the fourth from Gaby Montalvo and and Tidrenczel’s first goal of the game with 4:17 on the clock made it 11-10.

The game remained that way until Tidrenczel tied it up at 11-all with her second goal with 1:15 on the clock. After a turnover by Princeton the Tigers were called for two exclusions with less than 20 seconds on the clock. With a two-man advantage, Tidrenczel found the net with seven seconds on the clock to put the Bears ahead. Princeton got a shot off as the clock expired but it went wide giving the Bears their first victory over Princeton since February 28, 2010.

Ava Schoening had three goals for the Bears and Montalvo added two. Cleo Washer, Ella Palmer, Alexandra Love and Samantha Kim all scored once.

The Bears closed the night by cruising to an 11-1 win over Mercyhurst, marking the first time Brown has allowed just one goal in a game since March 24,2015 against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Both Schoening and Julia Sansing had two goals for the Bears, while Hana Homma, Claire Poissonnier, Aubrie Anderson, Alessandra D’Arcy, Love, Kim and Sofia Holman all scored once.

Mercyhurst netted the first goal of the game just over a minute into the contest but Brown kept the Lakers from finding the net for the rest of the game, while the Bears notched 11 unanswered goals.

Brown led 3-1 after the first and 5-1 at halftime. The Bears scored three more goals in each of the second half quarters.
