NEWBERG, Ore. — Luke Carey (Sr., Orlando, Fla.) scored eight times to collect Player of the Game recognition as No. 5-ranked/Florida Division Champion the University of Florida doubled-up No. 14/Northwest Division Champion the University of Washington, 18-9, in the first round of consolation play at the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship hosted by Oregon State University at the Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Due to the win, Florida advances to face Southeast Division Champion the University of Alabama at 2:50 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, November 12, in the second round of consolation action. A win places the Gators in the Ninth Place game, while a loss drops Florida into the 11th Place game on Sunday, November 13.
Historically, the Gators have recorded marks of Eighth (2000), Third (2001), 11th (2002), Ninth (2003), Fourth (2008), 13th (2009), Third (2011), 12th (2017), 10th (2018) and Sixth (2019) as a victory over the Crimson Tide will lock-up another Top 10 finish for Florida.
Washington – which previously placed Second (2000), Sixth (2001, 2002) and Eighth (2006, 2009) at the Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship – will conclude its participation at the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship at 9:50 p.m. Pacific on Saturday, November 12, as the Huskies will tangle with No. 16/New York Division Champion the United States Military Academy.
Florida never trailed in the clash with Washington as the Gators opened up a 5-0 lead with 1:06 left in the first quarter, carried a 5-2 margin into the second quarter and possessed an 11-4 scoreboard advantage by halftime to roll away with the win. Out in front 15-4 at the conclusion of the third quarter thanks to a 4-0 scoring advantage in the frame, the Florida Division Champion capped off the win by outscoring the Huskies 3-2 over the final seven minutes for the 18-9 final spread.
For Florida, Micah Bayle (Fr., Hudsonville, Mich.) and Tyler Conti (Gr., Charlotte, N.C.) tacked on five and three goals, respectively, to join Carey in posting multi-score games for the Gators. Thomas Chippindale (Fr., Orlando, Fla.) and Nathan Weaver (Jr., Oviedo, Fla.) both dented the twine once, while goalies Lars Hammersmark (Jr., Gainesville, Fla.) and Adriana Zunino (Gr., Lima, Peru) combined for six saves.
Washington received a hat-trick from Memphis Woods (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) along with solo tallies by Matt Mulfinger (Sr., Bellevue, Wash.), Nick Findley (Jr., Tacoma, Wash.), Lucas Ishizaki (So., Orange County, Calif.), Henry Stemp (So., Tacoma, Wash.), Kevin Zhang (Fr., Seattle, Wash.) and Griffin Hallahar (Jr., Seattle, Wash.). Liam Griffith (Jr., Catro Valley, Calif.) and Aiden Bartlett (Fr., Gig Harbor, Wash.) combined for seven saves in the loss.
