No. 6 University of California-Los Angeles-vs.-No. 7 San Diego State University Scoresheet (2023 Collegiate Water Polo Association Championship – Game #29/Ninth Place)

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Goalkeeper Anna Vaughan made 11 saves and scored on a last second heave at the conclusion of the first quarter to be honored with Player of the Game laurels as host/Pacific Coast Division runner-up//No. 6-ranked the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) clipped Southwest Division runner-up/No. 7 San Diego State University, 8-6, in the 2023 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship ninth place game.

UCLA – which previously finished in fifth (2010), sixth (2008), seventh (2011) and ninth (2009) place at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship – led throughout the majority of the contest as Meena Khan and Vaughan scored with 2:18 and no time left in the first quarter for a 2-0 lead after seven minutes of action.

Charley Jackson and Keianna Pineda (3:28) padded the lead to 4-0 within the first four minutes of the second quarter before Jordan Wagner put the Aztecs on the scoreboard at 1:46.  UCLA’s Natalie Wilcox (1:16, man-up) and SDSU’s Emily Maddox (17 seconds) lobbed in last minute goals as San Diego State exited the first 14 minutes with a 5-2 scoreboad margin.

Silke Tuyls (5:11, man-up) trimmed the Aztecs’ deficit to 5-3 at the 5:11 mark of the third quarter, but Jackson tossed in a pair (4:11; 21 seconds) and Annabella Rapp (four seconds, man-up) stroked in a six-on-five bid to expand the lead to 8-3.

Down by five with one seven-minute quarter remaining, San Diego State tried to put together a heroic comeback as Annie Ly (5:13; 1:00) and Maddox (3:48) fired in shots, but UCLA’s lead was too much to overcome as the Aztecs fell by an 8-6 final score.

For SDSU, Ly and Maddox scored twice with Tuyls and Wagner accounting for solo markers. Goalkeeper Roisin McMullen made five saves as the 2014 National Champions have now placed first (2014), third (2017, 2019), fourth (2015), fifth (2012, 2016) and 10th (2023) at the event.

For the host Bruins, Jackson finished with a hat-trick to go along with solo strikes by Rapp, Wilcox, Pineda, Khan and Vaughan.
