BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Danielle Johnson (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas) scored twice to claim Player of the Game accolades as 12 different student-athletes from No. 7-ranked/Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) regular season champion the University of Michigan found the back of the cage in a 22-2 defeat of Saint Francis University to reach the semifinals of the 2017 CWPA Championship at Indiana University’s Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Michigan (26-8, 9-0 CWPA) records the largest margin of victory in an Eastern/CWPA Championship game in the history of the league shattering the previous high of 20-5 established on April 29, 2016, as the Maize & Blue downed George Washington University at Harvard University.
The Wolverines never trailed jumping out to leads of 6-1, 13-1, 18-2 and 22-2 at the conclusion of the first, second, third and fourth quarters as the win marked the 16th straight year that Michigan has opened the CWPA tournament with a victory. U-M also extended its current winning streak to 14 games as it moves on to the semifinals where the Wolverines will take on the No. 5 seed in the tournament and 20th-ranked team in the country, Harvard University, at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29.
The Crimson advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament for the first time since 2000 as Harvard topped No. 16 Indiana University, 12-11, to take down the host school and punch its ticket to a showdown against Michigan.
2017 CWPA Most Valuable Player Allison Skaggs (Sr., Lake Forest, Calif./El Toro), Christina O’Beck (Jr., Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor) and Caroline Anderson (Jr., Palto Alto, Calif./Henry M. Gunn) each racked up hat-tricks, while Danielle Johnson, Kim Johnson (So., Walnut Creek, Calif./Las Lomas), Rachel Sodokoff (Fr., Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and Alex Corbett (Fr., Sydney, Australia/MLC School) registered pairs of tallies. Arija Walsh (Fr., Maineville, Ohio/San Marcos (Calif.)), Kimberly Graziano (Sr., Ann Arbor, Mich./Skyline), Kaitlyn Cozens (Sr., Sacramento, Calif./St. Francis), Julia Sellers (So., Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) and Laura Jimenez (Jr., Commerce, Calif./Montebello) completed the Maize & Blues’ scorers with solo strikes.
Freshman Maddy Steere (Fr., Pascoe Vale, Australia/St. Catherine’s School) and sophomore Delaney Cleveland (So., Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) each tallied three assists, while Graziano and freshman Skyler Pyle (Fr, Long Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) both posted four steals.
In cage, Heidi Ritner (Fr., Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) posted her 25th victory of the season as she made five saves with one goal allowed. Cameron Cordial (Fr., Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) had two saves with one goal permitted.
Kelly Fehr (Fr., Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) accounted for both of the Red Flash’s goals by putting away even-strength shots with 4:47 left in the first quarter and at the 6:02 mark of the third quarter.
Kate Wilke (Fr., Burbank, Calif./Burroughs) took the loss with five saves as the defeat drops SFU into a consolation game at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, against the victor of another consolation game pitting host/No. 16 Indiana versus George Washington University with a berth in the Fifth Place game on the line.
