No. 8 Arizona State University-vs.-No. 16 University of Central Florida Scoresheet (2022 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship – Game #18)

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama — Catherine Simko (Gr., Mission Viejo, Claif.), Brynn Bogard (Jr., Solana Beach, Calif.) and Lindsey Torgerson (Sr., Seal Beach, Wash.) each scored twice to share Player of the Game honors as No. 8-ranked/Southwest Division Championship runner-up Arizona State University outmatched No. 16/Southeast Division Championship runner-up the University of Central Florida, 8-2, to earn a spot in the Ninth Place game at the 2022 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship.

The Sun Devils will return to the water at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 8 against No. 3/Midwest Division Champion the University of Notre Dame for the Ninth Place game.   Arizona State – which is making the program’s first appearance at the National Collegiate Club Championship since 2014 – previously finished Fourth (2014) and Ninth (2011, 2012) as the squad will seek to add another Ninth Place mark to its legacy.

ASU led for all but 59 seconds of the game as Torgerson broke the ice with 6:51 left in the first quarter to stake the Sun Devils to a lead they would not relinquish the rest of the way. Lindsay Robertson (Fr., Helotes, Texas) tossed in a chance with 1:56 on the clock as the Southwest Division runner-up exited the first seven minutes with a 2-0 lead.

Toriana Thind (Orlando, Fla.) cut ASU’s lead in half 34 seconds into the second quarter, but Simko (6:04) and Torgerson (3:49, man-up) responded as Arizona State went into halftime with a 4-1 scoreboard advantage.

The margin ballooned to 7-1 with 3:15 on the third quarter clock as Simko (4:44), Bogard (4:02) and Katie Kenyon-Appelt (Gr., Tacoma, Wash.) (3:15) put away scoring bids.  Madeline Ayres (Jupiter, Fla.) moved the Lady Knights back to within five at 7-2 with 32 seconds left in the frame, but Bogard closed out the scoring with 11 seconds left.

Neither team was able to add to its total during the fourth quarter as the Sun Devils claimed an 8-2 victory.

Central Florida will wrap-up its participation at the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship on Sunday, May 8, as the Lady Knights will tangle with the Lakers of Midwest Division Championship runner-up Grand Valley State University at 3:30 p.m. in the 11th Place game.

In the history of the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship, UCF has previously placed Second (2013), Fifth (2017), Eighth (2010), 10th (2015) and 11th (2009) as the team will seek to add another 11th place mark to its legacy.
