NEWBERG, Ore. — Mason Westkaemper (So., Dallas, Texas) scored four times, while the trio of Elton Sjoenell (So., Los Angeles, Calif.), Tucker Jones (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and William Pino (Sr., Albuquerque, N.M.) all posted three markers, as No. 9-ranked/New England Division Champion Dartmouth College topped No. 5/Texas Division Champion the University of Texas, 15-9, at the Chehalem Aquatic and Fitness Center to earn a spot in the 2022 Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship Ninth Place game.
The Big Green will next be in action at 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, as Dartmouth – which has placed Fourth (2013, 2015), Sixth (2012), Seventh (2001) and Eighth (2008) at the Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship since 2000 – meets the winner of a consolation game pitting No. 5/Florida Division Champion the University of Florida and Southeast Division Champion the University of Alabama for Ninth Place.
The loss drops Texas – which previously finished Second (2010, 2017), Third (2012), Fifth (2019), Sixth (2005, 2009, 2014, 2018), Eighth (2013, 2015), Ninth (2021), 11th (2004) and 13th (2003) at the Men’s National Collegiate Club Championship – into the 11th Place game at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, as the Longhorns will take on the loser of the Florida-Alabama game.
Dartmouth never trailed against Texas as the Big Green pulled ahead 5-2 and 8-4 at the conclusion of the first and second quarters, respectively, before outscoring the Longhorns 4-3 and 3-2 in the third and fourth quarters to claim a six-goal win.
For Dartmouth, Adam Van Uden (Sr., Walnut Creek, Calif.) and Dylan Bienstock (Sr., Santa Barbara, Calif.) chipped in solo markers to join Westkaemper, Pino, Sjoenell and Jones in the scoring column. Chris Colsman (So., Weston, Mass.) stopped one shot to earn the win between the pipes.
Across the tank, Tyler Barber (Fr., Houston, Texas) and Mark Weisberg (Jr., Plano, Texas) stuffed in three goals apiece to lead the Longhorns’ attack. In addition, Zachary de Haaff (Jr., Menlo Park, Calif.), Hugh Flanders (So., Danville, Calif.) and Joe Lofgren (Sr., Plano, Texas) accounted for single strikes in support of a four save effort by netminder Ben Thomas (Fr., Eugene, Ore.).
