PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Saint Francis University team went 2-2 over the opening weekend of the 2020 season at the Bruno Classic hosted by Brown University.

On Saturday, February 1, the young Red Flash, which debuted 10 freshmen, shook off some early season rust in a 19-6 loss in the season opener to No. 18-ranked Wagner College. Saint Francis freshmen accounted for five of the team’s six goals led by two apiece from from Abbie Carter (Abbotsford, Canada/St. John Brebeuf) and Addison Williams (Clovis, Calif/Sanger).  Freshman Taylor Halbauer (Edmonton, Canada/Mother Maragret Mary) and sophomore Breanna Dupperon (Regina, Canada/Campbell Collegiate) also got on the scoresheet with their first tallies of the season. Freshman Heather Jacobson (San Jose, Calif./Presentation) made four stops in goal in her collegiate debut.

Saint Francis bounced back strong in its second game to defeat Siena College, 17-15, in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair. Halbauer was the star performer with a team-high five goals, while Carter added three. Freshmen Haiden Lang (Placentia, Calif./Esperanza) and Camille Lyter (Manhattan Beach, Calif. /Mira Costa) also struck for the first two goals of their career and were joined with two goals by Williams. Freshmen Carissa Semple (Sakatchewan, Canada) and Chloe Ryan (Chicago, Ill./Mother McAuley) also found the back of the net for their first goals, while Dupperon provided the lone goal not scored by a freshman. Sophomore goalie Rosalinda Rivera (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) made 13 saves.

On Sunday, February 2, Saint Francis dropped a tight 13-10 matchup with Division III No. 4 Whittier College despite three goals from Williams and two apiece from Semple and Ryan. Junior Metztli Enriquez (Atwater, Calif./El Capitan) garnered two steals, while Jacobsen and Rivera combined for seven saves.

In the Red Flash’s concluding game of the weekend, Saint Francis defeated first-year varsity program Long Island University, 9-7. Halbauer netted three goals, Carter and Dupperon had two, and Semple had a goal and a team-high three steals. Jacobsen was rewarded with her first career win in the cage, stopping 10 of 17 shots.

Saint Francis freshmen accounted for 37 of the team’s 42 goals for the week. Halbauer led all Saint Francis goal scorers with 11 followed by Carter’s eight. Halbauer and Enriquez paced SFU with four saves, while Enriquez also had a team-high four assists.
