ERIE, Pa. — Saint Francis University took down St. Francis College Brooklyn, 15-14, and La Salle University, 14-10, of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) to close out the Mercyhurst University Invitational.
In the Saint Francis Brooklyn game, the Red Flash jumped out to an early lead as Kelly Fehr (Erie, Pa/Villa Maria Academy), Marialena Seletopoulou (Glyfada Athens Greece/Yannopoulos School) and Kelsey Gring (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) all scored to make it 4-2 at the end of the first quarter.
Despite a number of Red Flash goals, the Terriers tied it up at 8-8 at the end of the second period.
In the third period, the Terriors jumped out to a 12-9 lead and appeared to be in command of the game. Fehr and Seletopoulou scored back-to-back goals to narrow the margin to 12-11 at the third period horn blew.
The fourth period belonged to Seletopoulou as she scored all four goals including the clinching shot with 1:07 left to make it 15-13. Saint Francis Brooklyn scored a goal with two seconds left to cut it to 15-14 prior to the final horn.
Facing the Explorers of La Salle, Seletopoulou took over the game as she scored as many goals as La Salle did as a team. Ani Aghakhanian (La Crescenta, Calif/La Valley College) chipped in with three markers as the Red Flash cruised in the third and fourth periods. Amber Rogers (Souderton, Pa/Souderton) recorded 15 saves against La Salle to earn the win.
