SALEM, W.Va. — The Salem International University Department of Athletics announced the return of women’s water polo to the institution’s athletics program. The team will compete as a club in 2017-18, with the intent to once again become a National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) varsity program in 2018-19.

With the growing success of Salem International University’s men’s water polo team, the athletics department brought men’s and women’s swimming to the varsity ranks for the 2016-2017 year and are now looking to add to the water sports with women’s polo.

“We are really excited to be able to add to our sport offerings and provide this new opportunity for students,” said co-Director of Athletics Steve Potts.

“The addition of women’s water polo complements our growing aquatics programs and will help SIU attract new students from across the world,” said co-Director of Athletics Florin Marton.

Salem International University will be the only school in West Virginia to offer women’s water polo bringing the total number of States with women’s water polo to nine.

The athletics department is currently developing a schedule and looking into conference affiliation, and have begun a search for a head coach.
