BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — University of Michigan rising junior Madeleine “Maddy” Scarth (Surrey, British Columbia, Canada/Huntington Beach (Calif.)) shot zero-for-one, assisted on a goal and posted a field block as Canada stopped South Africa, 12-4, in a 13th-16th Place round-robin game at the 2025 World Aquatics Women’s Junior World Championships (U20) in Salvador, Brazil.
Canada – which previously nixed Mexico, 19-8, on Wednesday, August 13, behind a team-high five steals by Scarth – will conclude the round-robin on Friday, August 15, at 9:00 a.m. local/8:00 a.m. Eastern in a battle for 13th Place against Argentina. Argentina also enters the contest 2-0 in round-robin competition following defeats of South Africa (15-10 W, August 13) and Mexico (12-8 W, August 14). Mexico and South Africa will compete for 15th Place at 10:30 a.m./9:30 a.m.
The Canadians never trailed in the game as the squad opened up a 3-0 lead by the conclusion of the first quarter and inflated its margin to 5-1 entering halftime. Ahead 10-2 exiting the third quarter, Canada held off South Africa to claim an eight-goal victory.

A member of the Canadian Junior National Team which placed second at the 19U Pan-American Championships in 2022. Scarth started her tenure at Michigan by appearing in three games during a redshirt season. In 2025, she accounted for 14 goals, nine assists, seven steals and won three-of-seven sprint attempts.
