NEW LONDON, Conn. — Utica College dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Carthage College, 13-4, and Division III No. 9-ranked Macalester College, 15-1, at Connecticut College’s Lott Natatorium in the Pioneers’ opening Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III league games of the 2018 season.

In Utica’s league-opener against Carthage, senior Krystiana Rehrig (Pennsburg, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored a team-high two goals, both coming in the opening quarter. Rehrig’s efforts helped the team secure a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.

Carthage responded by outscoring Utica 5-0 in the second, before coasting to a nine-goal victory. Hnyla Sloan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) tallied one goal and one assist, while Meagan Stanton (Chemung, N.Y./Waverly) registered one score as well.

Lara McNamara (Yonkers, N.Y./Maria Regina), Daniela Hannah (Dalton, Ga./Northwest Whitfield) and Rebecca Merrill (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) all notched one assist in the contest. Goalie Michalyn Winkler (Barto, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) posted 18 saves and six steals.

Facing the defending CWPA Champion Scots of Macalester in the second game of the day, Rehrig accounted for the Pioneers’ sole score off an assist from McNamara.
 
On the defensive end, Domenica Risucci (Utica, NY/Whitesboro) tallied two steals, while McNamara, Hannah, Stanton and Sloan all contributed one steal. Courtney Kennedy (Long Island, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and Winkler shared goalie duties in the game in making six saves and two saves, respectively.
