STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Wagner College men’s water polo team earned victories over Division III No. 10-ranked Johns Hopkins University, 16-12, and first-year varsity program Long Island University, 20-22, in the first Seahawks’ home games of the season.
For the second consecutive day, Wagner defeated fellow Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) institution Johns Hopkins in league competition.
The Seahakws, who turned back the Blue Jays by a 17-6 count on Saturday, October 15, in a neutral site league game at Fordham University, got off to a fast start as they outscored Johns Hopkins 3-1 in the opening frame. The home team added five more strikes in the second quarter to hold an 11-5 lead heading into halftime.
Wagner responded with another five goals in the third quarter to create a comfortable lead in the third as they took a 13-6 advantage into the final stanza.
In the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays attempted to rally by outscoring Wagner 6-3. However, the Seahawks’ lead proved too much as Wagner escaped with a four goal victory.
In the first ever game between the two programs, Wagner carried its momentum from the opening game of the day to overwhelm the Long Island Sharks.
Leading 5-1 following the first eight minutes, Wagner expanded its lead to 11-4 by halftime courtesy a 6-3 scoring advantage in the second quarter.
LIU outscored Wagner 5-4 in the third quarter as the Seahawks carried an 15-9 lead into the final eight minutes of regulation.
Wagner closed out the game with a 5-2 run to the final horn.
