ERIE, Pa. The Connecticut College women’s water polo team dropped a 13-11 decision to Washington & Jefferson College in Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III-East Region competition hosted by Penn State Behrend.

The two teams played a tightly contested game throughout, but the Presidents outscored the Camels 6-4 in the second half to seal the victory. W&J improves to 3-6, while Conn dropped to 2-4.

Gigi Sandull (Kenilworth, N.J.) paced the Camels with three goals, while teammate Maria Sell (San Mateo, Calif.) also finished with a pair of scores. Eight different Connecticut players contributed to the goal total in the losing effort.

The Camels built a 3-2 lead by the end of the first quarter thanks to goals from Sell and Sandull. In the second, the Camels increased its advantage to 7-3 due to two more scores from Sandull, and a goal a piece from Emma Luna (Wahiawa, Hawaii) and Melia Lorch (Encinitas, Calif.) but the Presidents rattled off four consecutive tallies in the final four minutes of the half to tie the score at seven-all heading into the break.

Connecticut regained the lead in the third quarter thanks to back-to-back scores from Brooke Brandenburger (Sacramento, Calif.) and Sarah Franco (Weston, Conn.), but once again W&J stormed back to end the quarter on a 3-0 run. The Presidents tacked on two more scores in the fourth quarter to seal the 13-11 victory.
