FUKUOKA, Japan — Former University of Michigan athletes Abby Andrews,Amy Ridge and Sofie Pontre ’21 M ’22 combined to shoot zero-for-six as Australia outlasted Greece, 9-8, in the quarterfinals of the 20th World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan.

Courtesy the victory, Australia advances to a semifinal clash with Spain on Wednesday, July 26, at 5:30 a.m. Eastern.  The other semifinal features Italy versus the Netherlands at 4:00 a.m. Eastern.

Andrews – who played for Michigan in 2019 – connected on zero-of-four shots in 22:45 of playing time, while Ridge – who competed for Michigan in 2016 – shot zero-for-two in 18:19.  Pontre did not post a shot during her 8:06 of time in the water.

Australia fell behind 4-3 after a quarter of action, but exploited a 4-1 scoring advantage in the second quarter to take a 7-5 lead heading into halftime. Greece responded to outscore Australia 3-2 in the third quarter, but neither team found the twine in the fourth quarter to allow the Aussies to escape with a one goal win and a guaranteed Top Four finish at the World Aquatics Championships.
