SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Division III No. 7-ranked Austin College snuffed out the Firebirds of Carthage College, 10-7, on the second day of a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III weekend hosted by Division III No. 7 Macalester College.
Yamila Areizaga was the first to score for the Firebirds, finding the net in the fourth minute of the first period to tie the game at one-all. Brenna Carstens added to the Firebirds offensive effort with a goal in the final minute of the first quarter to move ahead by a 2-1 count. However, Carthage found itself tied at two-all with the Kangaroos entering the second quarter.
Victoria Hodges and Kylie Hemming both scored in the seventh minute of the second quarter in staking the Firebirds to a 4-2 lead.
Leading 4-3 coming out of halftime, Brenna Carstens returned the lead to a pair during the first minute of the third quarter as Carthage move ahead by a 5-3 count.
However, Austin came storming back to move ahead 7–5 before Emily Steingard chipped Carthage’s deficit down to a solo marker with two minutes left in the third quarter.
Sarah Lowery maintained the momentum with a score in the seventh minute, but the Firebirds struggled down the stretch to fall 10-7 versus Austin.
