BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. will serve as host of the 12-game, eight-team 2017 Men’s Division III Collegiate Club Championship on Saturday-Sunday, October 28-29.
Featuring representatives from the Missouri Valley Division (Washington University in St. Louis), Mid-Atlantic Division (Carnegie Mellon University), New York Division (Hamilton College), North Atlantic Division (Bates College), Heartland Division (Augustana College), New England Division (Tufts University), Colonial Division (United States Coast Guard Academy) and the host Panthers, the two-day tournament will decide which program is the best small college club water polo program in the nation.
Three-time defending Division III National Champion Washington University in St. Louis, which tied with the University of California-Santa Cruz for the 2013 crown prior to downing Middlebury (2015) and Carnegie Mellon (2016) in the past two tournaments, will aim to solidify a 21st Century dynasty by capturing the program’s fourth consecutive title.
However, 2003 National Champion Middlebury and 2009 National Champion Tufts will aim to return to the top of the hill in the Green Mountain State, while Carnegie Mellon seeks to settle unfinished business from its 2016 championship game loss.
Coast Guard and Bates will also be in the mix to claim their inaugural Division III titles and return the Division III crown to the East Coast for the first time since Tufts won it all in 2009. UC-Santa Cruz (2010, 2013), Washington in St. Louis (2011, 2014, 2015, 2016) and now varsity institution Monmouth College (2012) of California, Missouri and Illinois all reeled off wins since the Jumbos (Massachusetts) took home the prize nearly a decade ago.
Competition begins at Noon on Saturday, October 28, as Middlebury meets Washington at Noon prior to Bates-vs.-Augustana (1:10 p.m.), Carnegie Mellon-vs.-Coast Guard (2:20 p.m.) and Hamilton-vs.-Tufts (3:30 p.m.) conclude the first round.
The consolation and semifinal rounds continue the day as the Loser of Game 2 meets the Loser of Game 1 at 4:40 p.m. and the Loser of Game 4 battles the Loser of Game 3 at 7:00 p.m.
The title game showdown will be decided at 5:50 p.m. and 8:10 p.m. as the Winner of Game 1 faces the Winner of Game 2 prior to the Winner of Game 3 clashing with the Winner of Game 4, respectively.
