BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2017 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference-West Region schedule featuring Connecticut College, Gannon University, La Salle University, Mercyhurst University, Monmouth College, Salem International University, Washington & Jefferson and first-year varsity program McKendree University.
It marks the second season of competition in the Western Region of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) after the inaugural campaign in 2016 following the division of the CWPA into the MAWPC East and West Regions along with the New England Water Polo Conference (NWPC).
MAWPC-West Region competition begins on Friday-Saturday, September 22-23, as Salem International hosts Washington & Jefferson and Gannon.
Following a 15-game tournament on Saturday-Sunday, September 23-24, at Washington & Jefferson, including a pair of non-league games for Penn State Behrend of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), action continues with nine games at Connecticut College on Saturday-Sunday, October 21-22. At Connecticut, Penn State Behrend will play three non-league games.
Monmouth will host six games on Saturday-Sunday, October 28-29, prior to Gannon and Mercyhurst clashing in a league game on a date and at a time to be determined.
The eight Western Region teams will meet at the David M. Hallman III Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa. on Saturday-Sunday, November 4-5, to determine which program rates at the top of the group.
The top two teams from the Western Region advance to face the six East Region teams (Bucknell University, Fordham University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, United States Naval Academy) at the conference championship tournament hosted by Navy on Friday-Sunday, November 17-19.
In the history of the past Eastern, CWPA and MAWPC Championship tournaments, Bucknell (1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 2016) and Navy (1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008) are the lone Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference programs to previously capture a title as no team from the Western Region of the conference has ever captured the championship.
