BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Due to the University of California-Santa Cruz being unable to host the championship, the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) announces the 2017 Women’s Collegiate Club Sierra Pacific Division Championship will move to California State University-Maritime Academy on Saturday-Sunday, April 8-9.
The largest division in the women’s collegiate club ranks with 11 teams, the Sierra Pacific Division is comprised of California State University-Chico, Cal Maritime, Saint Mary’s College (Calif.), the University of California “A’, the University of California “B”, the University of California-Davis “A”, the University of California-Davis “B”, the University of California-Santa Cruz “A”, newcomers the University of California-Santa Cruz “B” and San Jose State University and returning competitor Fresno State University.
Fans should be aware that there is a fee for parking at Cal Maritime.
The schedule adjusts for the new site as competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 and run until the final game at 5:10 p.m. to conclude the ninth game on the first date of competition. Competition follows a similar pattern on Sunday, April 9, with the final nine games to wrap-up the 18-game championship weekend.
Similar to past seasons, the Sierra Pacific Division champion will receive an automatic berth to the 16-team National Collegiate Club Championship on Friday-Sunday, May 5-7, at the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Created in 2007 when the Pacific Coast Division was split into two divisions, the Sierra Pacific Division has been among the most competitive divisions over the past seasons as four teams (Fresno State – 2007; UC-Davis – 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2016; UC-Santa Cruz – 2010, 2012; California – 2015) have captured the title, while six programs have advanced to the division title game (Fresno State – 2007; UC-Davis – 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016; CSU-Chico – 2009; UC-Santa Cruz – 2010, 2012; California – 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016).
On the National stage, both UC-Davis (2012, 2013) and California (2015) have combined to capture three of the past five club championships. Fresno State, which returns to the league following a lengthy absence in 2017, also captured a National Championship as the squad took home the 2007 crown.
