BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Due to the cancellation of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s water polo season as a precaution against the Coronavirus/COVID-19, the inaugural women’s USA Water Polo Division III National Championship will not occur in 2020.
The championship is a joint effort by the Division III water polo institutions of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) and USA Water Polo to provide Division III student-athletes the opportunity for a meaningful postseason competition in addition to offering an incentive for other Division III institutions to add the sport on a varsity level. It was slated to occur at the SCIAC Champion in 2020.
Beginning with men’s water polo in December of 2019, and originally slated for women’s water polo in May of 2020, two teams from both the SCIAC and the CWPA, square off in a four-team Division III national championship tournament. The SCIAC assumed hosting responsibilities for both genders in the first year of the championship (2019-20) with Whittier College serving as the men’s championship site during the fall.
