BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The number of student-athletes competing in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) women’s water polo in 2021-22 increased according to the latest data in the NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Participation Rates Report (PDF). The number of athletes competing increased to 1,356 in 65 programs (20.0 per team), an increase from 2020-21 in which 1,235 women played water polo on 65 teams (19.0 per team).
Broken down by division, Division I saw a decrease of one in the number of programs (35-to-34), but an increase in the total number of athletes (736-to-785) and average team size (20.9-to-23.1). Division II saw an increase in the number of programs (11-to-12), athletes (231-to-249) and average squad size (21.0-to-20.8), while Division III did not see growth in the number of teams (19-to-19), but upticks in the quantity of athletes (274-to-322) and team size (14.4-to-16.9).
