BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The 2021 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC)-East Region schedule featuring Bucknell University, Fordham University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, Mount St. Mary’s University, the United States Naval Academy and Wagner College is now available.

Following a 2020 season which was delayed until the Winter of 2021, the composition of the MAWPC-East changes slightly for 2021 due to La Salle University eliminating its men’s varsity water polo program following the conclusion of the latest campaign.  Mount St. Mary’s  – which competed in the MAWPC-West Region during the Winter of 2021 in the program’s inaugural season of water polo competition – replaces the Explorers in the MAWPC-East to maintain the group’s seven-team format.

Coming off a 2020 season in which Bucknell, Fordham, George Washington, Mount St. Mary’s, Navy and La Salle competed during the regular season with Iona College of the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) to determine one unified qualifier for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship from the two East Coast conferences, the 2021 season is anticipated to see the sport return to a state of “normalcy” with both the NWPC and MAWPC competing in separate conference schedules.

Further, unlike last season in which four teams made the MAWPC Championship – as regular season champion Navy was unable to host and compete at the event – the 2021 schedule will see all seven MAWPC-East institutions joined by the MAWPC-West Champion battle it out for the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Championship at Navy.

Since the formation of the NWPC and MAWPC from the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) prior to the 2016 season, Bucknell and George Washington have been the preeminent powers in the MAWPC-East as the Bison hold three titles (2016, 2019, 2020) and a runner-up mark (2018), while the Colonials possess two crowns (2017, 2018) and a runner-up finish (2019).  La Salle (2020) and Wagner (2016) have also appeared in the MAWPC Championship title game during the brief history of the group.
