BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Stanford University jumps two places to assume the No. 1 position as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the 2022 Men’s Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five and Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Week 4/September 28 Polls.
Stanford, which captured the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Invitational title over the weekend at home with an 8-7 defeat of the University of California-Los Angeles, and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges achieve and retain top billing in the National Top 20 and Division III Top 10 Polls, respectively, through the first four weeks of the 2022 NCAA season.
Defending MAWPC Champion Fordham University stays at No. 1 in the MAWPC Top Five Poll, while Harvard University keeps the lead position in the NWPC Top Five rankings.
Voted on by a panel of coaches from the MAWPC, NWPC, Golden Coast Conference, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), SCIAC and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls will be compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
2022 Men’s Varsity National Top 20 (Week 4/September 28)
The title of the nation’s best changes hands this week as defending National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Champion the University of California is bumped from the top spot by Stanford University in the Week 4/September 28 National Men’s Varsity Top 20 Poll.
Stanford (99 points) leads a Top 20 which experiences significant changes from the Week 3/September 21 voting in the aftermath of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Invitational and other intercollegiate competition.
The Cardinal – which hosted the MPSF Invitational – upended California by a 12-11 in the semifinals prior to dropping the University of California-Los Angeles by an 8-7 in the title game to fuel a two-spot rise after ranking at No. 3 last week.
California (93 points) and UCLA (93 points) move into a tie at No. 2, while the University of the Pacific (84 points) and the University of Southern California (82 points) stay at No. 4 and 5 for another seven-day run.
Long Beach State University (75 points) surpasses the University of California-Davis (71 points) as the duo exchange the No. 6 and 7 slots with the University of California-Santa Barbara (63 points) hanging on at No. 8.
The University of California-Irvine (56 points) cracks the Top 10 at No. 9 with Loyola Marymount University (49 points) wrapping up the upper half of the Top 20.
Harvard University (48 points) and Pepperdine University (46 points) flip-flop at No. 11 and 12. The University of California-San Diego (43 points) moves up one place to No. 13 with San Jose State University (39 points) and Princeton University (37 points) rating at No. 14 and 15, respectively.
California Baptist University (22 points) breaks out of a tie with Fordham University to acquire sole custody of the No. 16 berth. Fordham (13 points) falls into another tie at No. 17 with Santa Clara University (13 points), while the trio of Brown University (8 points), George Washington University (8 points) and St. Francis College Brooklyn (8 points) complete the Top 20 in a three-way tie at No. 19.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges remains No. 1 in the Week 4/September 28 Men’s Varsity Division III Top 10 Poll.
Pomona-Pitzer (99 points) – which posted 100 points last week to rate as a unanimous No. 1 selection – is again followed by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (96 points) and California Lutheran University (90 points) at No. 2 and 3.
Johns Hopkins University (74 points) gains company at No. 4 as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (74 points) pulls even with the Blue Jays.
Whittier College (70 points), the University of La Verne (68 points) and the University of Redlands (66 points) shift to stand at No. 6-to-8, respectively, with Chapman University (49 points) remaining at No. 9.
Occidental College (42 points) climbs into the Top 10 to claim the final spot.

Fordham University continues at No. 1 in the Week 4/September 28 voting Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Top Five Poll.
The Top Five remains unchanged from last week as Fordham (98 points), George Washington University (93 points), the United States Naval Academy (88 points), Bucknell University (87 points) and Wagner College (67 points) remain locked in at No. 1-to-5.
The MAWPC features 11 teams with Bucknell, Fordham, George Washington, Navy, Wagner, Johns Hopkins University, Mount St. Mary’s University, Gannon University, Mercyhurst University, Salem University and McKendree University competing for the conference crown in 2022.

2022 Men’s Varsity Northeast Water Polo Conference Top 5 (Week 4/September 28)
Harvard University retains the No. 1 spot in the Week 4/September 28 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) Top Five Poll.
The 2016, 2017 and 2019 NWPC Champion Crimson (98 points) – which took over at No. 1 last week – retain a narrow one-point lead over 2018 and 2021 NWPC Champion Princeton University (97 points).
St. Francis College Brooklyn (89 points), Brown University (86 points) and Iona University (80 points) remain at No. 3-to-5.
The NWPC features seven institutions in 2022 with Brown, Connecticut College, Harvard, Iona, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton and St. Francis Brooklyn competing for the league championship.
