GRESHAM, Ore. — 10 different players for Texas Division Champion/No. 18-ranked Texas A&M University scored as the Aggies stormed to a 16-1 victory over Atlantic Division Champion/No. 15 Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University (Virginia Tech) in the first of two 13th/15th placement games on the second day of the 2018 Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship at Mt. Hood Community College.
Due to the win, the Aggies finish in a tie for 13th place and Virginia Tech ties for 15th place as the final four spots in the 16-team field are not played out due to limited pool time for the championship.
Overall, its marks the fourth time a Texas Division team has placed 13th following previous Sixth (2005), Eighth (2006, 2001), Ninth (2017), 10th (2009, 2004), 11th (2012, 2011, 2003), 12th (2014, 2013, 2005, 2002), 13th (2010, 2007, 2016) and 15th (2008, 2015) place marks since 2001. Further, it is the second time the Aggies of Texs A&M have notched a 13th place mark after previous trips to the Women’s National Collegiate Club Championship in 2001 (Eighth), 2005 (12th), 2008 (15th), 2010 (13th), 2013 (12th), 2014 (12th), 2015 (15th) and 2017 (Ninth).
Lauren Kenney (So., Santa Ana, Calif.) and Jenny Cary (Jr., Houston, Texas) led the way for the Aggies with hat-tricks, while Michelle Hubbard (Jr., League City, Texs) and Alyssa Koerber (So., League City, Texas) both notched pairs. Rylan Scott (Fr., Santa Barbara, Calif.), Nikki O’Donnell (Sr., Cypress, Texas), Sefanit Rezene (Fr., Dallas, Texas), Julia Johnson (So., Woodlands, Texas), Christina Lewandowski (Jr., Houston, Texas) and Chelsea Bulseco (So., League City, Texas) each tacked on solo markers.
For Virginia Tech, Brittany Henry (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) accounted for the Hokies’ goal as the team concluded its inaugural appearance at the National Collegiate Club Championship.
In cage, goalie of record Scott and Emily Kincaid (Fr., League City, Texas) combined for 11 saves in helping Texas A&M to the win. Adana McWhinney (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) took the loss for Virginia Tech with two saves.
