BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Goalie Julen Alonso (Fr., Madrid, Spain/IES Beatriz Galindo) of Salem University made 41 saves with eight steals and posted a 2-1 record at the Mercyhurst University Laker Invitational to earn recognition as the September 16 Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) Rookie of the Week.
Competing against Penn State Behrend, Gannon University and La Salle University at the Hallman Aquatics Center in Erie, Pa., Alonso held his own between the pipes to key the Tigers to a pair of wins.
He opened the weekend by turning aside 11 shots and grabbing four steals in a 17-11 victory over Penn State Behrend on Friday, September 13. Alonso wrapped up his weekend by stopping 15 shots with two steals versus the Gannon Golden Knights in a 16-10 loss prior to collecting another 15 stops with two steals in a 13-12 overtime win against the Explorers of La Salle.
