BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — A total of 70 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) student-athletes are among 363 players nominated and selected to the 2017 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Men’s All-Academic Team.
Divided into three teams based on cumulative grade point average, league members garnered 24 Outstanding (4.00-3.71), 28 Superior (3.70-3.41) and 18 Excellent (3.40-3.20) honors as six institutions submitted nominees for the team in the second season of play for the NWPC.
The total marks a six athlete increase over the NWPC’s 64 selections as the league accounts for 19.3% of the 363 total honors (95 Outstanding, 148 Superior, 120 Excellent) bestowed to varsity men’s water polo players by the ACWPC in 2017.
Topping the list is Brown University which notches 16 selections (five Outstanding, eight Superior, three Excellent). The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (five Outstanding, five Superior, two Excellent) comes in second with 12 honorees, while Iona College (four Outstanding, five Superior, two Excellent), St. Francis College Brooklyn (six Outstanding, three Superior, two Excellent) and Harvard University (six Superior, five Excellent) each notched 11 awards.
Princeton University (four Outstanding, one Superior, four Excellent) comprise the remaining nine nods.
In addition, five of the 21 schools that broke a 3.0 grade point average to earn Team All-Academic recognition compete in the Northeast Water Polo Conference. MIT (3.62), St. Francis Brooklyn (3.50) and Brown (3.49) rate at No. 2, 4 and 5, respectively, in the nation with Harvard (3.30) and Iona (3.24) stand at No. 6 and 9.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete’s head coach must be a member of the ACWPC, while the athlete must attain a grade point average in excess of 3.20.
In total, 176 student-athletes that compete in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) administered league earned recognition as the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) collected 106 (33 Outstanding, 39 Superior, 34 Excellent) laurels.
Further, teams from East Coast conferences led the Team All-Academic Awards as 11 of 21 schools that topped a 3.0 GPA compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC. Eight schools that compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC stand among the Top 10 teams in the country, including four of the Top Five.
