BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — A total of 75 Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC) student-athletes are among 395 players nominated and selected to the 2018 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Men’s All-Academic Team.
Divided into three teams based on cumulative grade point average, league members garnered 30 Outstanding (4.00-3.71), 25 Superior (3.70-3.41) and 20 Excellent (3.40-3.20) honors as six institutions submitted nominees for the team in the third season of play for the NWPC.
The total marks a five athlete increase over the NWPC’s 70 selections in 2017 and an increase of 11 selections from 2016’s total of 64 as the league accounts for 18.98% of the 395 total honors (111 Outstanding, 163 Superior, 121 Excellent) bestowed to varsity men’s water polo players by the ACWPC in 2018.
Topping the list is Brown University which notches 16 selections (six Outstanding, six Superior, four Excellent). St. Francis College Brooklyn (seven Outstanding, two Superior, five Excellent) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (seven Outstanding, five Superior, one Excellent) follow with 14 and 13 honors, respectively, with Princeton University (one Outstanding, two Superior, seven Excellent) also cracking double-digits with 10.
Harvard University (one Outstanding, six Superior, two Excellent) and Iona College (four Outstanding, four Superior, one Excellent) round out the selections as the pair both notched nine accolades.
In addition, six of the 24 schools that broke a 3.0 grade point average to earn Team All-Academic recognition compete in the Northeast Water Polo Conference as MIT (3.73), Brown (3.56), Harvard (3.38), St. Francis Brooklyn (3.38), Iona (3.27) and Princeton (3.10) all notched the honor.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete’s head coach must be a member of the ACWPC, while the athlete must attain a grade point average in excess of 3.20.
In total, 177 student-athletes that compete in a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) administered league earned recognition as the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) collected 102 (36 Outstanding, 41 Superior, 25 Excellent) laurels.
Further, institutions from East Coast conferences led the Team All-Academic Awards as 13 of 26 schools that topped a 3.0 GPA compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC. Eight schools that compete in either the MAWPC or NWPC stand among the Top 10 teams in the country, including the Top Four and six of the first seven.
