BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Saint Francis University head coach Jay O’Neil addresses “How to Take Advantage of Water Polo’s New Rules” during the 25th “Coaches Corner” interview presented by the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA).
He breaks down the National Collegiate Water Polo Association (NCAA)/collegiate club rules for the 2026–27 season and explain how coaches and players can turn these changes into a competitive advantage. With a major emphasis on simulation, O’Neil explores how the new penalties could change offensive and defensive strategies, what players need to do differently and how teams can capitalize on opponents who have not adapted to the evolution of the game.
Named the second Red Wolves’ water polo coach in September 2017, O’Neil came to Loretto (Pa.) from Washington & Jefferson College, where he coached the men’s and women’s water polo teams for four seasons. He led the Presidents to a combined record of 104-100 and earned the 2012 CWPA Women’s Division III Coach of the Year honor.
A 1997 graduate of Bucknell University, where he played four seasons with the Bison, he coached at his alma mater and Salem University prior to joining the Washington & Jefferson staff. In addition, he served as aquatic director and head varsity swimming coach at Somerset Area High School (Pa.) for 10 years.
