SPRINGFIELD, Va. — Host George Washington University split a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) games at The St. James as the Revolutionaries fell to Bucknell University, 22-9, before beating Mercyhurst University, 14-8. GW moved to 11-13 overall with a 2-7 record in the MAWPC.
After an overtime contest decided the winner between GW and Bucknell in the first contest between the teams earlier this season, it was not as close in the second meeting as the Bison led wire-to-wire to beat the Revolutionaries.
A 5-1 lead after the first quarter yielded to an 11-4 halftime advantage for Bucknell, and GW could only come within six of the Bison in the second half as Bucknell clinched the season series. Konstantinos Kapragkos (three goals) and Andrea Forno (two goals) led GW’s offense.
Game two was far more fruitful for the Revolutionaries, who took the lead first and never gave it up on their way to completing the season sweep over Mercyhurst.
GW took a comfortable 8-2 lead into halftime and the Lakers’ pressure in the second half failed to generate a comeback.
Kapragkos, Forno and Yam Kabakov each had three goals in the win.
