BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Defending Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Champion the University of Michigan will aim to make its mark on the 2017 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) landscape as the No. 7-ranked Wolverines will compete against No. 4 University of California, No. 6 University of California-Irvine, No. 8 University of Hawaii, No. 17 San Jose State University, No. 19 University of California-Davis, No. 20 Loyola Marymount University and the host/No. 1 Cardinal at the Stanford University Invitational on Saturday-Sunday, February 4-5.
Featuring five Top-10 ranked teams, the tournament field is split into two brackets as Stanford, Hawaii, UC-Irvine and Loyola Marymount will compete in round-robin play in Bracket A, while Michigan, California, San Jose State and UC-Davis battle in Bracket B.
Competition begins on Saturday, February 4, at Stanford’s Belardi Pool as Stanford-vs.-LMU (8:30 a.m.), Hawaii-vs.-UC-Irvine (9:45 a.m.), Michigan-vs.-UC-Davis (11:00 a.m.) and California-vs.-San Jose State (12:15 p.m.) comprise the opening round of action.
Play resumes at 4:30 p.m. at two sites as UC-Irvine-vs.-LMU (4:30 p.m.) and San Jose State-vs.-UC-Davis (5:45 p.m.) occur at Belardi, while Stanford-vs.-Hawaii (4:30 p.m.) and Michigan-vs.-California (5:45 p.m.) take to the water in Avery Stadium.
Similar to the final four games on Saturday, two pools will be utilized for the remaining 10 games on Sunday, February 5, as Hawaii-vs.-LMU (8:30 a.m.) and Michigan-vs.-San Jose State (9:40 a.m.) are slated for Belardi Pool with Stanford-vs.-UC-Irvine (8:30 a.m.) and California-vs.-UC-Davis (9:40 a.m.) on tap at Avery Stadium to conclude round-robin competition in Brackets A and B.
The results of bracket play will determine the final four games as Fourth in Bracket A-vs.-Fourth in Bracket B (2:00 p.m.) and Third in Bracket A-vs.-Third in Bracket B are contested at Belardi Pool to decide Fifth-through-Eighth place in the final standings.
At Avery Stadium, Second in Bracket A-vs.-Second in Bracket B is slated for 2:00 p.m. prior to the tournament championship game pitting the victors of Bracket A and Bracket B at 3:15 p.m.
