2017 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team (PDF)
BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — Michael Squeglia (Sr., Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) of Gannon University has been named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Division II Academic All-District II At-Large Team. He now moves on to the national ballot where first, second and third team Academic All-America honorees will be announced later this month.
Squeliga earns CoSIDA Academic All-District II at-large first-team accolades for the second time with a 3.77 cumulative grade point average. The finance major has been named a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athlete and received the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award every year. He played in 17 matches as a senior men’s water polo student-athlete this year. Squeglia recorded 18 goals, 19 assists, 37 points, 17 steals, four field blocks and two earned exclusions.
He landed a spot on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America honorable-mention team and ACWPC All-Academic “Superior” team last year as a junior. Squeglia ranks 15th all-time at Gannon in sprint-off wins (5), 17th in goals (85) and 17th in assists (60). He recorded one hat trick and six multiple-goal performances this season.
This is the sixth year of the expanded Academic All-America program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored. The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. The Academic All-District teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
To be nominated by an institution for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at his current institution.
Nominated athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at the position listed on the nomination form (where applicable). Athletes who have not participated in at least 50 percent of their team’s contests are not eligible. No student-athlete is eligible until he/she has completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Male water polo recipients compete with athletes from the following sports: Fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming, tennis, volleyball and wrestling.
The NCAA Division II District II consists of the same NCAA Division II colleges and universities listed athletically in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region. The district includes the PSAC, the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and independent Bluefield State.
He is one of two men’s water polo student-athletes from the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference (MAWPC) and one of three from an East Coast conference to garner Academic All-District recognition by joining fellow MAWPC selection Nicholas Willison (Division III, District IV) of Washington & Jefferson College and Brown University’s Luke Weiser (Division I, District I) of the Northeast Water Polo Conference (NWPC).
Overall, six men’s water polo players earned either Division I, II or III laurels as David Maes of Fresno Pacific University, Joseph Moorman of California Baptist University and Mihajlo Milicevic of the University of Southern California collected laurels.
