BRIDGEPORT, Pa. — The University of Michigan’s Alexandra Corbett (So., Sydney, Australia MLC School) and Indiana University’s Mollie Williams (So., Sutherland Shire, Australia/Meriden) will compete for Australia at the 12th FINA World Women’s Junior Water Polo Championship in Volos, Greece, on September 3-9.
The tournament features 16 teams divided into four groups with Japan, Russia, Hungary and the Netherlands battling in Pool A; China, Australia, South Africa and Greece meeting in Pool B; Italy, Canada, Serbia and Slovakia contesting Pool C; and Spain, Croatia, New Zealand and the United States squaring off in Pool D.
Australia will open the tournament on Monday, August 4, against Greece prior to squaring off with China (Monday, September 4) and South Africa (Wednesday, September 5).
A 2017 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Honorable Mention and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) All-Conference Second Team selection, Williams is currently competing the Australia World University Games team in Chinese Taipei /Taiwan. She joined the Hoosiers of Indiana at the semester break and led a potent freshman class with 42 goals and six hat tricks, adding 27 assists and 46 steals to the season effort. She led Indiana with 26 drawn exclusions and notched eight field blocks.
Similar to Williams, Corbett joined Michigan in January 2017 and contributed 14 goals, three assists, six drawn exclusions and three steals in helping the Wolverines capture the 2017 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship and a berth to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.
A 2015 graduate of the MLA School in Sydney who attended the Australian Catholic University, she helped her team finish first in the Australian University Games. Further, as a member Australia Junior and Youth Women’s National Teams she participated in the 2020 Australian Towards Tokyo Camp at the Australia Institute of Sport. A member of the 2015 Australian All Stars open team, she competed at the Australian Senior Camp in 2015 for the World League Finals and was a member of the 2014 and 2015 Junior U/20’s squad.
