SANTA CLARA, Calif. — No. 16-ranked Indiana University opened the Santa Clara University Invitational weekend in style, securing a 16-2 win against Sonoma State University. The Hoosiers saw six players record multiple goals, led by a hat trick from senior Kelly Matthews.
The trio from Matthews brings her career scoring tally to 225 across 107 career appearances. That mark passes the total set by CWPA Hall-of-Famer Krista Peterson (224 from 2002-05) for the fourth-most in program history. That output marked Matthews’ 38th career hat trick.
Indiana’s goalkeeping pair, Jessica Gaudreault and Davis Simmons, combined for 10 saves with nine going to Gaudreault. Jennifer Beadle, Kelly Matthews and Karrie Kozokar controlled the field defense with three steals apiece.
Indiana leapt to a commanding lead in the first quarter with five unanswered scores and six in the first eight minutes. Sarah Young scored two of the first three for IU, while Beadle provided her first of two goals midway through the quarter. Sarah Myers scored on her only shot of the day, followed by Joelle Nacouzi‘s double in 90 seconds to give the Hoosiers a 6-1 lead.
Matthews began her hat trick journey with Indiana’s first goal of the second quarter, converting a five-meter penalty shot. Jessica Rodriguez found her fifth goal of the year in the final minute of the half, extending the IU lead to 8-1.
The Seawolves countered Megan Abarta‘s score to start the third quarter, leading the Hoosiers to answer with six consecutive scores down the stretch. Matthews completed her hat trick before the end of the third, and Beadle capped the quarter with her second goal of the game.
Beadle’s double in front of her hometown crowd is just a continuation of her recent form. The Hoosiers’ senior has 12 goals in IU’s last five games.
Two additional Hoosiers, Karrie Kozokar and Riley Beemer, ended the game on a high note with multiple scores in the final quarter.
